One of the biggest issues surrounding a SR&ED claim is the importance of keeping sensitive information absolutely secure. SR&ED claims are a synopsis of the innovation and technological advancements within specified industries, and the last thing a business owner would like is to see that information shared (accidentally or not), with a competitor.
When considering hiring a third party to aid in your SR&ED filing, be sure to do your homework. Usually these types of contracts are for several years at a time, so you want to make 100% certain the company you choose has taken all the proper steps to keep your information safe. Here are a few considerations before signing on the dotted line.
Is the Company Certified?
When finding the perfect company to handle your SR&ED Tax Benefit, look for a company that’s not only reputable, but is certified. If a company has a quality certificate, such as being ISO certified, it shows that they take quality and security seriously and understand the needs of the clients as well as the responsibilities that arise with taking on this type of project.
How is the information stored?
When meeting with your consultant, ask about how the online information is stored. Odds are that secure information will be travelling through the web, so you want to be sure it won’t get in the hands of others. Look for signs that the information is backed up on secure servers. Even offline storage systems that seem average (like filing cabinets), should be secured and tracked. And of course, security systems are a must. If the information you will be giving the consultant is of the highest security, ask for a tour of the premises.
